Basketballs

As the leaves began to fall from the New England trees in 1891 a man named James Naismith started to develop and indoor game to keep students in shape during those cold Northeastern winters.

An instructor at the Y.M.C.A. Training School in Massachusetts,Birmingham shirt, Naismith attached a wood peach basket to the walls at opposite ends of a gymnasium and used a soccer ball to shoot baskets.

Naismith named the game basketball,Celtic shirt, soon YMCA’s across the country were playing the game and by the end of WWII it was a recognized sport through out the world thanks to U.S. troops.

Unlike many other sports that utilize protective padding you need very little equipment to play the game.? Thus many manufacturers have spent a lot of money on developing the best basketball conceivable.?

Changes over the years have been numerous.? In fact you may be able to bid on an old laced basketball on EBay if you wanted to buy a piece of history.? Truthfully we don’t have to go that far back to see substantial changes in the ball.

Little more than a decade ago most players preferred a full grain leather cover with narrow channels and the only thing between the cover and the bladder was glue.

Now composite balls top the sales charts and wide channels have replaced narrow channels almost completely and the space between the cover and the bladder is now home to things like Rawlings Padded Zone Technology?.

Modern basketballs are like high tech sports cars.? When your behind the wheel all you want to do is drive.? Like a sports car the technology under the hood blends with your skill and reflexes for the ultimate experience.?

Let’s take a look at the Rawlings Vision Basketball for example.? A supple microfiber cover,Villareal shirt, deep skived channels and to top it off Padded Zone Technology? for unbeatable ball control.? Suddenly the ball is improving my performance on the court.

We’ve certainly come a long way since Naismith developed the game and I have no doubt that basketballs will continually change as new materials become available.

Until then test drive a Rawlings Vision Basketball.

KUs Perkins runs up big bills on private planes

LAWRENCE, Kan. University of Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins billed the athletics department more than $150,000 for 22 flights on university-owned and leased planes from July 2008 to May 2010, far more than his counterparts at Kansas State and Missouri spent during the same period.

That doesn’t include 23 other private flights he took during that time, The Kansas City Star reported in a story Sunday.

According to the newspaper, which examined Perkins’ travel vouchers, the Kansas official also spent thousands of dollars on car services, rather than renting vehicles at much lower rates.

In February 2009, Perkins flew from Lawrence to Columbia by executive-style jet to attend the Kansas men’s basketball game against Missouri. Meanwhile, coach Bill Self and the defending national champions rode a bus.

For that one night, Perkins spent $1,983 on the flight and $380 for ground transportation.

“In my world, time is very important,” Perkins told the newspaper. “I consider my time very valuable. That’s one of the reasons why we have planes, to help us get places quicker.”

He earned $4.4 million last year,Peru football shirt, with bonuses, at Kansas, and charged the athletic department at least $107,000 for 22 private flights. In some cases, he flew when he could have driven in three hours or less to places such as Wichita, Hutchinson and Lincoln, Neb.

In comparison, Kansas State athletic director John Currie has taken 10 private flights costing $28,430 in his 15 months in that position.

Records show Perkins spent about $7,000 on ground transportation during the 22-month period reviewed by The Star, including $1,827 during two days in New York.

Earlier this year, Perkins took the university’s jet for a 139-mile trip to Pittsburg,Bordeaux shirt, Kan., to attend the funeral of former Kansas State quarterback Dylan Meier, whose younger brother Kerry had just finished his career at Kansas.

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder also flew to the funeral on a university plane from Manhattan. But the big difference was that Snyder rented a car for $44 to take him from the airport to the funeral, while Perkins spent $425 for a car service.

Missouri athletic director Mike Alden said he usually uses commercial airlines or drives when he takes trips outside of Columbia. The university doesn’t own a plane, and instead uses private planes provided by donors.

Alden said he uses private planes fewer than five times a year, and when he does take a donor plane to a men’s basketball game, he goes only when invited on already-planned flights.

Perkins uses planes owned by Tim Fritzel, a major donor, and Ren Newcomer, both of whom give at least $50,000 a year to the Williams Educational Fund. Boosters at Kansas who donate flight hours can be reimbursed for the cost or earn priority points for their Williams Fund accounts,AS Roma shirt, which helps them get good seats at Kansas athletic events.

Records show Perkins often flew on executive planes up to three times a month, and on at least five of those flights he or he and his wife were the only passengers on a six- or eight-seat plane.

Perkins’ employment contract allows him to fly first-class on university business, but he rarely does so.

On one trip, he flew on US Airways for $1,Celtic shirt,883 to Phoenix for the “Fiesta Frolic,” an annual golf retreat for college football coaches. For another, he flew on American Airlines for $720 from a Kansas baseball game in Raleigh, N.C., to Dallas for a Big 12 Conference meeting.

He took a university plane from Dallas to Lawrence at a cost of $3,397.

“Going commercial is an option,” Perkins said. “But there’s a lot of places we can’t get to on commercial flights. You can miss flights, all of those things. Please understand: I don’t look at it as a luxury. It’s just a convenience.”

The 65-year-old is scheduled to retire in September 2011. If he remains athletic director until June 30, 2011, he will receive a $600,000 retention payment.

Perkins said he likes to attend every basketball game, and during a three-week period of the 2008-09 season, he took private planes to games at Iowa State, Nebraska and Missouri.

“The team buses or drives to Iowa State, it’s a five-hour drive each way,” he said. “I can get in and leave right away. It definitely is, from a business standpoint, a time-saver for me.”

Life around sports gives MU golfer Ryne Fisher lessons to succeed

COLUMBIA — Growing up in Tennessee, Ryne Fisher heard all the stories. He heard about his grandfather, George Fisher, who played baseball for ten years with the Chicago Cubs organization. He heard about his father, Mickey Fisher, who played college basketball with “Fly” Williams on the 1973 Austin Peay team that went to the Sweet Sixteen.

Since he was a boy, Fisher has been surrounded by sports. Along with the accomplishments of his grandfather and dad, his two older brothers grew up playing soccer and his mom was a cheerleader at Austin Peay. He was even named after the famous Chicago Cub second baseman, Ryne Sandburg.

Now a junior , Fisher is looking to make a name for himself on the MU men’s golf team. He chose a different route, playing an individual sport, but he is using lessons that he learned from his family.

While most kids have childhood memories of playing on the jungle gym,Glasgow Rangers shirt, Fisher’s earliest memories involve playing golf. His grandfather introduced him to the game when he was 3. By the time he was 4 or 5, he played in his first tournament.

“My granddad got a little old and was too competitive and cocky to just let it go,” Fisher said. “He got my dad into golf and it’s kind of how I would stay out of trouble.”

RyneFisher also grew up playing basketball. Everyday, father and son would either go out and hit golf balls or shoot free throws in the driveway. They were always together according, to the younger Fisher.

As Fisher made the transition to high school, one thing became clear to him. He needed to pick one sport to focus all of his attention. Golf offered him the best opportunity to excel and earn a scholarship.

“I don’t think my dad really wanted me to play basketball,” Fisher said. “He never played professionally, but he was still one hell of a player. He didn’t want me to be in his shadow.”

Even though he grew up in a family tied to sports, Fisher did not feel the pressure to be like his grandfather or dad. According to Fisher, this might be attributed to playing an individual sport.

“I didn’t really feel the pressure. I knew my bloodlines and I am very happy with what my parents and grandparents have accomplished. They have always been very supportive and understand how hard I have worked,Inter Milan shirt,” he said.

Staying with golf has worked out so far for Fisher. When he was deciding on colleges, Austin Peay’s head coach,Juventus shirt, Mark Leroux, recruited him. This washis gandfather and father’s alma mater.

During his senior year, Leroux became the head coach at Mizzou and told Fisher that he would honor his scholarship at Mizzou if he wanted to join the team. For Fisher it was an opportunity he could not pass up.

“I had my heart set to go away for a little bit,” he said. “I needed to get away and live on my own for a while. When coach Leroux went to Mizzou, it turned out to be an unbelievable situation.”

Although he is now hours away from his home of Clarksville, Tenn.,Paris Saint Germain shirt, Fisher is still using the lessons he learned from his family. One of these lessonsis the importance of listening to his coach. After playing sports, both his grandfather and father eventually became coaches. Fisher was able to see the other side of the picture.

“Ryne is very supportive of me and my abilities to coach. He trusts me and I think he understands it more than the others,” Leroux said.

Another characteristic Fisher seems to have picked up from his family is a competitive nature. When he arrived at Mizzou, Leroux wanted him to redshirt his freshman year, but Fisher had plans of his own. Even though he finished in fourth place in his first collegiate tournament, he still thinks Leroux was right.

“Now that I look back, it probably would have been a good idea to redshirt. But I am just so competitive and I had to get in the lineup,” Fisher said.

Teammate Peter Malnati has experienced his competitive drive firsthand. Malnati and Fisher grew up in Tennessee and played each other on numerous occasions during high school. Malnati is happy that they are finally on the same side.

“It’s funny. We still hate losing to each other except when we go to tournaments,” Malnati said. “It’s cool getting to be friends with someone who you always wanted to beat so badly in high school. Everything he does, he gives 100 percent.”

This season, Fisher has cracked the starting lineup in four of the five team tournaments. He has improved in each tournament, moving from a tie for 80th in his first tournament to a tie for 26th in his last.

“It’s his competitive nature,” Leroux said. “There is not a shot that he won’t try. Not a feat that he doesn’t think he can overcome. I don’t know if you call it guts or what, but he is willing to do whatever it takes.”

No timetable for Bradfords return

OKLAHOMA CITY Before the season started, Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator talked about preparing the Sooners to deal with an injury to Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford.

The worst case scenario became reality Saturday night and the result was a season-opening 14-13 upset at the hands of BYU.

Now, with no timetable for their star quarterback’s return,Ajax shirt, the Sooners are looking for Plan C or at least a revised Plan B.

“Whether he is here or is not here for this week and the weeks to come, we’re sitting right here at 0-1 and we’ve got to buckle it up and get moving in a quick direction and a positive direction,” offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Sunday.

Oklahoma’s medical staff was still taking a look a treatment options for Bradford on Sunday. The injury to Bradford’s right, throwing shoulder has been called a sprained AC joint. Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter missed two games last season and played as a reserve three weeks after injuring the joint.

Wilson said a similar process is ongoing for second-team All-America tight end Jermaine Gresham, who has cartilage damage in his right knee and didn’t play against BYU.

“Those are not just necessarily for our team, but those are two tremendous players that have great futures. We want to make sure their best interest is taken into consideration with what’s being done,Sevilla shirt,” Wilson said.

“There’s no rush. There’s no judgments.”

Only four days before he was hurt, Bradford described how he’d taken out an insurance policy after he decided to pass up the chance to be a first-round pick in this year’s NFL draft and instead pursue a national championship at Oklahoma.

The Sooners have no such policy,Werder Bremen shirt, but they have been through this before. Starting quarterback Jason White got hurt in both 2001 and 2002, prior to his Heisman Trophy run. Adrian Peterson was a season and a half removed from being the Heisman runner-up when he broke his collarbone in 2006 and missed seven games.

Two of those three seasons ended with Oklahoma still winning the Big 12 championship and going to a BCS bowl.

“We do have a track record here,” Wilson said. “We’ve lost some guys through the years. It is a part of the game. You don’t want it. You don’t want it for anyone, but I do think we’ve shown that we do have the ability to adjust and we do have a bunch of good players here that will rally and pick it up.”

If Bradford is unable to return in time for this Saturday’s home opener against Idaho State and more importantly for games against Tulsa on Sept. 19 and at Miami on Oct. 3 the Sooners have more issues to deal with than just the loss of their star quarterback.

A rebuilt offensive line with four new starters committed nine penalties as part of what Wilson called “a tremendous comedy of errors.” With so much going wrong around him, redshirt freshman Landry Jones had little chance for success while replacing Bradford in his college debut. He guided Oklahoma on five drives, netting only one field goal.

Even when Bradford was in the game, Oklahoma was outgained by BYU 245 yards to 164 in the first half.

“If we go out there and play behind chains and our protection is not clean … or our receivers are dropping balls or we’re having penalties or balls on the ground, like any quarterback, he’s not going to play good,” Wilson said.

Wilson said he’s most disappointed that the sloppy play came from veterans who’d played in big games before, although they were reserves instead of starters at the time.

“We’re not going to make wholesale changes but right now,Manchester City shirt, (Saturday) night is what we are. That was evident. That’s what we are,” Wilson said. “We need to make some significant improvement to be the team that we’re capable of being. Right now, it’s disappointing to play that way.”

Rams get their wish in preseason opener

ST. LOUIS — Rams coach Scott Linehan got what he wanted from the Rams preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings – a victory and a useful game film.

What caught his eye the most, he said Saturday in a news conference at Rams Park, was the performance of his top three draft picks.

Brian Leonard rushed for a touchdown,Peru football shirt, Adam Carriker helped stop Minnesota up the middle, and the Rams beat the Vikings 13-10 on Friday night in Minneapolis. Jonathan Wade contributed some tackles in the secondary.

“The top three were highlights for me personally,” Linehan said. “Adam did a tremendous job in his game playing live. He really held his own. Brian brings a lot of versatility to the table. He can be a heck of a player for us. Jonathan Wade is the guy who really showed up. On the first play of the game on the kickoff team, he made a really sure tackle.”

Carriker, the first-round draft pick and new nose tackle from Nebraska, helped anchor a strong interior effort against Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson _ who carried 11 times for 33 yards.

Leonard, the second-round choice, scored the Rams’ only touchdown.

Wade, the third-round selection from Tennessee, took a knee to the neck that shook him up. He did return to play. He will undergo an evaluation Sunday and,Bordeaux shirt, if cleared, will return to practice.

“He got his bell rung and he was cleared 5 or 10 minutes after he came out,South Africa football shirt,” Linehan said. “He felt fine afterwards. He made a great open field tackle on a reverse.”

The Rams were tough to run on as the Vikings failed to move the chains on five of seven third downs in the first half. Ryan Longwell’s 30-yard field goal was all the starting offense, minus Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson, mustered while playing through most of the second quarter.

The backup to Pro Bowl pick Steven Jackson, Leonard rushed nine times for 36 yards and caught five passes for 30 yards.

“For Brian we couldn’t have scripted it better. We wanted to see him run the ball. We wanted to see him catch it. We wanted to see him protect,” Linehan said. “It’s a good start.”

The Rutgers running back scored on a 10-yard run up the middle with the second unit that gave his team a 7-3 lead. He rushed for 26 yards and caught an 8-yard pass in the 73-yard scoring drive. Leonard sustained a bruise to his lower rib cage but he will be able to practice, albeit with some discomfort, Linehan said.

The Rams came away from the game with only one major injury. Receiver Dominique Thompson has two displaced ribs in his lower right side and it will be a “at least a few weeks” before he can participate in any contact, Linehan said.

“Overall, it was a solid performance and there were a lot more positives than negatives,” Linehan said. “It wasn’t a perfect game by any means. It gives us a good starting point.”

NOTES: The Rams practice for Sunday afternoon is now closed to the public because of the forecast calls for the temperature to be 101 degrees. Linehan said he did not if the club will work outdoors or indoors. … the Rams won a challenge in the third quarter but Linehan had trouble getting his red flag out of his pocket. “I had to get through five or six things in my pocket to find my red flag,” Linehan joked. “That will never happen again. I threw everything. I’m surprised I didn’t rip my pants off. I don’t know if they have me on film or not but I’d like to burn it if they do. It would be pretty embarrassing.” … Veteran center Andy McCollum,Real Madrid shirt, who did not start Friday after ailing last week with a stomach virus, will start in this Saturday’s preseason home opener against San Diego.

Granddaddy coach

,Porto shirt

Wearing a black, long-sleeved Mizzou shirt, former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson didn’t hesitate to answer “Missouri” when asked which team he will cheer for when the Razorbacks visit Columbia on Nov. 30.

“No question about it,” Richardson said. “Blood is thicker than water. There’s no question that (Missouri coach) Mike Anderson is like blood to me.”

Richardson, who coached Arkansas from 1985-2002, was at Mizzou Madness on Friday night at Mizzou Arena. He made the drive from Fayetteville, Ark., where he still resides, to visit Anderson and observe the Tigers’ first weekend of practices.

The two coaches remain close friends after Anderson played for Richardson at Tulsa from 1980-82 and coached under Richardson from 1982-2002 at Tulsa and Arkansas. Then, Richardson’s contract was bought out in 2002, and Anderson left for the head coaching job at Alabama-Birmingham. Richardson, who won 389 games and the 1994 national championship, said he talks with his former player and assistant coach every day.

“Mike is like another son,Dortmund shirt,” the former Arkansas coach said. “If I don’t speak to him in the morning, I most certainly will have spoken to him by 10 o’clock that night. Just finding out how things are going and finding out how practices are going.”

Richardson’s influence on Anderson is apparent. Anderson’s team plays much like Richardson’s did, employing a full-court, trapping, aggressive, defensive-minded style of play.

“Coach Richardson is my mentor,” Anderson said. “I got to stay true to the things that helped him all the way. He is like the granddaddy, the father of ‘40 Minutes of Hell’ and up-tempo basketball.

“It’s fitting that he gets a chance to come and have a chance to meet our players, so they’ll know the guy that actually started the style of basketball that they’re playing.”

The two spent 22 years working together, but they both said the relationship goes beyond basketball. Their conversations include topics other than what happens on the court.

“Family. Our kids, they’re like his grandkids,” Anderson said. “Everything that’s going on in our lives and our family’s lives.”

One of the biggest decisions Anderson has made in his coaching career was his decision to come to Missouri. Richardson encouraged Anderson to take the Missouri job, leaving behind his success at UAB.

“Great opportunity. Missouri has always been great basketball,Wales football shirt,” Richardson said. “They used to kick our butts all the time. There’s no question that when you’re talking about Mizzou, you’re talking about basketball. Right now they’re doing a great job football-wise, but in my estimation, it’s always been one of the top basketball schools in the country.”

Richardson’s biggest piece of advice after Anderson took the job wasn’t to emulate what he did at Arkansas. Instead, he told Anderson to look at his own success.

“The only advice you can give a coach is to always be who you are,” Richardson said. “You don’t have to be anyone else; just be you. You’d be surprised how well you’ll pan out.”

It’s a lesson that has stuck with Anderson.

“I think more than anything else, he’s taught me to be who I am,Kaizer Chiefs shirt,” Anderson said.” I’ve got to stay true to myself.”

Hamlin wins third straight at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. Denny Hamlin passed Kevin Harvick for the lead with 29 laps to go Sunday and won his third consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway.

“I don’t think I’ve ever closed that well, ever,” Hamlin said in Victory Lane.

He became the first driver since Jimmie Johnson in 2007 to sweep both races on the shortest, tightest track in the series, and both he and Harvick closed the gap on Johnson in the points race with four races to go. Hamlin cut his 41-point deficit to six points, and Harvick is 62 behind.

The margin between the top two in the standings is the smallest with four races to go since the Chase for the Sprint Cup started in 2004.

Harvick finished third after Mark Martin passed him in the closing laps, but Harvick had his best showing in 19 career starts at the 0.526-mile oval; he’d never been better than seventh.

“Everybody said it was a two-horse race, and we were right there in the middle of it,” Harvick said. He gained 15 points in the standings, with the series heading next to Talladega, where he won in the spring.

Johnson, the four-time defending champion, rallied to finish fifth, also finishing behind Kyle Busch.

The race had 15 cautions for 90 laps, but the final 98 were run under a green flag.

“That’s exactly what we needed at the end,” Hamlin’s crew chief, Mike Ford,Fulham shirt, said.

The race seemed likely to be a battle between Johnson and Hamlin, who had combined to win the last eight races at Martinsville and began the day 1-2 in the point standings.

Instead of domination,AS Roma shirt, 12 different drivers led, and there were 24 lead changes.

Jeff Burton led the most laps with 134, but faded at the finish and came in ninth.

Jeff Gordon had a rough day, seriously damaging his chance for a fifth championship. He entered fourth in points,Lazio shirt, 156 behind Hendrick Motorsports teammate Johnson, but was spun into the frontstretch wall by Kurt Busch after running in contention all race long.

Gordon wound up 20th and fell to fifth in the standings,Wales football shirt, 203 points behind Johnson.

Carl Edwards, the Columbia native, finished eighth and moved up one spot to sixth place in the Chase, 213 points behind Johnson.
