Ace not enough for MU’s Jasper

Missouri golfer Shawn Jasper had two firsts Wednesday. Jasper advanced to the match play portion of his first U.S. Amateur Championship, and he made his first hole-in-one. The one first that he didn’t have was a victory in the first round. Gary Wolstenholme of England defeated Jasper 1-up at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. “It was a good time,” Jasper said. “It was my first USGA event and there is a lot I can take out of it.” The match was close throughout with no player having more than a 1-up advantage. Jasper trailed or was even until the 13th hole,Benfica shirt, when, with the match even, he hit his first hole-in-one on the 120-yard par 3 to take a 1-up lead. He used his pitching wedge. “I hit the ball and it looked good,” Jasper said. “My family and some fans were by the green and they were yelling. It took one hop and spun into the hole.” Jasper, a junior,Porto shirt, could not see the ball go into the hole from the tee box. He said he relied on the roar of the crowd to let him know whether his shot went in or not. Wolstenholme tied the match on the next hole with a par and then claimed a 1-up lead on the 15th hole after Jasper put his tee shot out of bounds and had a seven for the hole. “On 15 I had a extra long drive that went out of bounds,Inter Milan shirt,” Jasper said. “That was pretty much the only hole I gave him.” Jasper tied the match on the 16th hole, but conceded the par 3 17th hole after getting on the green in three shots. Both players pared the 18th hole,l.a.galaxy shirt, but Jasper needed to win the hole to stay in the match. |
