It wasn’t a season burdened with high expectations. The eighth-place finish projected for the Tigers by the Big 12 Conferencecoaches was considerably higher than most national publications, some of which even had Missouri finishing in last place in the conference. New Missouri coach Mike Anderson said it was a lot of work elevating the Tigers from 11th place to sixth place in the Big 12. (Missourian file photo) If anything, the Tigers were only expected to show progress and give their fans some reason to forgive the MU basketball program for three seasons of disappointment, mediocrity and controversy. And that, Missouri coach Mike Anderson said, was a great challenge. “It was work. No doubt about it. It was a lot of work,” Anderson said after his first season in Columbia. In the past three seasons,Birmingham shirt, Missouri had gone from a team ranked in the 2003-2004 preseason Top Five to a team that wasn’t able to defeat Sam Houston State and Belmont at home, or barely win any games on the road. By the end of the 2005-2006 season, any national talk about the Tigers was usually negative, whether it was how the department of athletics had botched the dismissal of Quin Snyder or how a new arena was never filled to capacity. This season, the talk wasn’t about contending for a national championship. But, at least it wasn’t about probabation or university investigations. “We got talked about this year. People were talking about us, and that’s progress,” Anderson said of his team, which finished 18-12 and in sixth place in the Big 12. “You’ve got to start somewhere. Last year or the last couple of years, people probably weren’t saying much about Missouri, so for the most part, we’ve got some more pride back in the program, some more respectability and we are going to be a team (to watch out for).” The recovery officially started in October with practices that emphasized running and conditioning almost as much as basketball fundamentals. To win games, and endear themselves once again to their fans, the Tigers were going to out work and out run their opponents. They didn’t promise wins, but they did promise hard work. If the Tigers were going to lose games, it wasn’t supposed to be because of a lack of hustle or grit. Instead, it was going to be from a lack of talent and experience. And, like Anderson said throughout the season, getting over the “newness” around the program. None of the Missouri players had ever played in a system similar to Anderson’s, nor did they know each other 3Bvery well. In fact, seven of the team’s 14 players were newcomers. “Any time you have a new system, new players, it’s going to take a little getting used to,” forward Marshall Brown said. “I think, for the most part, we adjusted pretty well.” But something funny happened while the Tigers were adjusting. It turned out that Anderson may have inherited more talent than he, or many others, thought. Kalen Grimes, Matt Lawrence and Leo Lyons, three players who rarely contributed last season, earned much more playing time. Grimes lost at least 15 pounds in the early-season conditioning sessions, helping him keep up with what his teammates were doing. Lawrence,Villareal shirt, who scored only 37 points in all of 2005-06, exhibited a jump shot that was consistent enough that former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson called him “Layups” for his ability to make shots like they were close to the basket. And Lyons, a 6-foot-9 forward blessed with quickness and athleticism, showed an improved jump shot to go along with an ability to drive past any forward who defended him away from the basket. “There was so much improvement on this basketball team. It is going to take me a while as I get away from it, to come back and look it,” Anderson said. “Look at Matt Lawrence. This was a guy that averaged 1.5 points per game and here’s a guy that averaged double-figures in our league. He’s one of the top three-point shooters in the country. Kalen Grimes. Here’s a guy that probably didn’t play a whole lot the previous two years because of foul trouble or just didn’t play. He’s in my starting line-up. He’s one of our most physical low-post players.” But the two players who provided some of the most memorable moments for the Tigers this season were newcomers Keon Lawrence and Stefhon Hannah. Hannah,Lazio shirt, a junior, and Lawrence, a freshman, formed a friendship that resembled brotherhood, with the older Hannah providing guidance and friendship to the freshman. That friendship may have even become closer on Feb. 6 in Ames, Iowa. Before that snowy and windy night in Iowa, the Tigers were just 2-6 in the Big 12 and were just three days removed from a loss at home to Nebraska. Both Anderson and the players acknowledged that something was missing from the team, a team that had started the season 11-2. Whether it was to reward Keon Lawrence or just to try something different, Anderson put the freshman from Newark, N.J., into the starting lineup. The Tigers won that night 77-55, and Keon Lawrence started every game but one the rest of the season, winning a Big 12 Rookie of the Week award three weeks later. Hannah, however, may have proved to be the biggest difference between this and last season. In prior seasons, Missouri lacked a point guard who could consistently make the outside jump shot while having the ability to penetrate and score points. In Hannah,Bayern Munich shirt, Missouri got one of the best point guards in the conference, and the best newcomer. Hannah won the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Year award. Missouri fans can hope that night in Ames is a preview of next season. Other than prep forward Justin Safford and redshirt DeMarre Carroll, the Tigers will return mostly the same players from this season, with only Marcus Watkins leaving. Next season, “newness” will not be a crutch for the team. And that is something Brown will relish. “We were comfortable, but I mean you got to learn as you go, especially with it being a new system,” Brown said. “With it being a new system you have to start from Square One. Now that we’ve been in it for a year we know what to expect, know what to do. So it’s not going to be as much teaching as it is playing.” If anything, the “newness” of Carroll should be something to help the Tigers fix their biggest deficiencies this season: rebounding and aggression near the basket. Those deficiencies cost the Tigers wins against Iowa State and Nebraska at home. If the Tigers had won those games, Missouri probably would have made the National Invitation Tournament. Matt Lawrence said he hopes that Carroll can provide some of what the Tigers lacked near the basket. “With the addition of DeMarre, and his ability to rebound and score for us, and his defensive ability as well, I’m really excited,” Matt Lawrence said. “I want next season to start right away.” |

Conference opponents haven’t been able to hold back the Columbia College soccer team. With their 12-0 win against Williams Baptist College on Thursday at Owens Stadium,Football shirts, the Cougars earned their fourth shutout in American Midwest Conference play in as many games. Steve Williams earned the shutout. The Cougars improved to 8-2, 4-0 in conference play, and the Eagles are 3-9,Paris Saint Germain shirt, 0-5. During the second half, a Columbia College soccer fan stood up in the bleachers and yelled, “It’s a blowout.” Seven Cougars scored and had 10 assists. Columbia College had 32 shots on goal to the Eagles’ three. “We were more happy about the shutout than the goals,” Columbia College coach John Klein said. “You always like a big win, but the shutout is the most important.” Forward Ben Boehner opened the scoring with goals in the eighth and ninth minutes. Boehner headed the first into the top right corner of the goal off a Juan Pagoda corner kick. On the second goal,Lazio shirt, Stephen McMullen passed the ball across the front of the goal to Boehner, who shot a low ball into the bottom left just past goalkeeper Jeff Medcalf. Boehner said he wanted the hat trick. “I have no one to blame but myself, sometimes the ball just doesn’t roll your way,” Boehner said. McMullen had the third and the fifth goals. Gustavo Lopez-Cesarego also scored in the first half, which ended 5-0. In the second half, the Cougars remained on the offensive half of the field for the majority of the time. Juan Pablo Irrera,South Africa football shirt, the team’s leading goal scorer, got his 12th goal of the season in the 69th minute. Steven Reineke had two goals and one assist in the second half. Ryan Lynch, Morten Crosby and Pagoda also had goals. “The score isn’t anything I’m proud of,” Klein said. “I couldn’t tell the guys not to score who are getting playing time. “It’s difficult for a team to keep heart in a game like that, but they kept a smile on their face and kept playing.” |

Suddenly, the Texas A&M men’s basketball team is playing its way back into NCAA tournament consideration. After going 14-1 in nonconference play, the Aggies limped to a 3-7 start in the Big 12. All appeared lost. Now,Wales football shirt, coach Mark Turgeon’s team has won four straight games to draw even at 7-7. The Aggies join a crowded group of teams in the middle of the conference standings fighting for inclusion in the NCAA tournament. Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri appear to be locks for the tournament. In seventh place in the conference with two games remaining, Texas A&M is still a long shot, but Turgeon is just happy his team is still playing for something entering March. “It’s the greatest time of the year for us,Valencia shirt, professionally, this time of year, especially if you have a team that’s starting to play well,” Turgeon said in Monday’s Big 12 coaches teleconference. “I told the young men that all the time. I said, ‘This is the greatest time of your life and the greatest time of the year.” Turgeon credits his players’ growing confidence for his team’s turnaround. “I thought we were turning it around really before we started to win,” Turgeon said. “I thought we were playing better. We were playing with more confidence. It helps to win, obviously, and it continues to grow.” Texas A&M is chasing Kansas State and Oklahoma State, which are both 8-6 in conference. Texas is 9-6 The Aggies play last-place Colorado on Wednesday and host Missouri on Saturday. Then comes the Big 12 tournament. Turgeon hopes to see continued growth from his players entering the team’s most important games this year. “I think this team at times in different areas continued to improve all year and that’s why we’re playing better right now,” Turgeon said. EARLY TOURNAMENT: Several Big 12 coaches said Monday they are happy with the change to the schedule for the conference tournament. In past years, the tournament has ended on Selection Sunday, when the NCAA tournament brackets were released. This year, the final game will be on Saturday, March 14. Kansas coach Bill Self said finishing the conference tournament a day earlier will help the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, which makes its final decisions on Sunday night. “I think it gives the selection committee a better chance to get it right,” Self said. “Anybody, the more time you have, the better chance that you could get it the way it should be.” Self said he likes the idea of having an extra day of rest before the NCAA tournament starts, too. CONGRATULATED COACHES: The U.S. Basketball Writers Assocation named three Big 12 coaches finalists for the 2009 Henry Iba Award for national coach of the year. Self, Capel and Missouri’s Mike Anderson are all finalists. The Big 12 is the only conference with more than one finalist for the award. The over 800 journalists who are members of the organization will vote to determine the winner. NO NAMES: With his team 4-9 in conference, Baylor coach Scott Drew decided to try something a little creative to emphasize the importance of team mentality to his players. He covered up the names on the back of their jerseys. “We really wanted to focus on Baylor and playing for Baylor so that’s how it kind of came about,” Drew said. “It was just a refocusing, a regrouping.” It worked, at least for one game. Baylor beat Colorado 75-57 on Saturday, but the Bears lost 73-57 on Monday at Texas. It has been a disappointing season for the Bears,Sevilla shirt, who the conference coaches picked to finish third in the preseason poll. |

Coming down with hypothermia Monday at the 111th Boston Marathon was an adventure that Stacy Reed will remember. Reed, one of 11 Columbia residents who competed in the wind and rain, was in bad shape as she approached the finish despite starting with three layers of clothing. “I was shivering and cramping,” Reed, 43, said by phone from Boston. After holding on to finish the race in 3:51:55,Villareal shirt, Reed went straight to the medical tent. She was given warm blankets and a warm-air plastic wrap. Her body temperature had dropped to 94.2 degrees, requiring her to receive IV therapy and fluid. This was the first time she said she ran in such “brutal conditions” in her six-marathon career. Reed, who also ran the Boston Marathon in 2004 and 2006, said she takes pride in running this race because participants have to qualify in order to compete, instead of just signing up. “It’s a great race,” Reed said. “The spectators are wonderful, and the volunteers are great.” Another Columbia resident, Cesar Mello, 41, participated in his fifth consecutive Boston Marathon. He said the “commotion of the weather” added to the challenge of the course and prevented him from finishing as well as he hoped. Mello wanted to beat the 2:57:45 he ran last year, but finished in 3:07:54. There are many reasons Mello said he continues to compete in the prestigious marathon. “Personally,Real Madrid shirt, I really enjoy the atmosphere, the town, and the race itself,” he said. Mello, who ran his 13th marathon, said he wants to take a break from running the Boston Marathon and pursue other great marathons throughout the world. Mello wants to complete the Marathon Series,Newcastle United shirt, which includes five of the most prominent marathons from around the world: Boston,Sunderland shirt, Chicago, New York, London and Berlin. Mello said is hoping to improve his time when he competes in the New York City Marathon on Nov. 4. He is also hoping to be accepted to run in the 2008 London Marathon. “Three out of five is pretty good,” he said. Other participants from Columbia include Daniel Hall, 41, 3:17:16; Munashe Chigerwe, 29, 3:19:25; Carl Specking III, 21, 3:21:09; Edward Sauter, 50, 3:33:00; Bradley Crow, 32, 3:36:21; Heather Hradel, 35, 3:51:52; Richard Wieman, 57, 4:19:15; Marcus Rowe, 36, 4:18:43; and Jennifer Moeller, 41, 4:18:43. |

Chris Sanders sat on a patch of grass near a softball field, a game being played in the background. Wearing a Missouri black and gold jersey and cap with gray baseball pants, Sanders began stretching his hamstrings to prepare for his first game with the Missouri United Methodist Church’s softball team. It’s a common sight at the Rainbow Softball Center at Cosmopolitan Park, where hundreds of players flock, along with their family and friends, on Sunday through Friday evenings. The Columbia Parks and Recreation Department offers adult softball for men, women and coed teams. Once a team signs up, it is classified into a league according to levels of competition. Leagues are grouped as Class B, Class C, Class D, Church or Senior. Class B leagues are for experienced players with good athletic skills, Class C is for the moderately skilled players and Class D is for pure recreation. Church leagues are relegated to church members only while senior leagues are for players that are 50 years of age and older. Sanders, a loan officer at Allied Mortgage Group, had played softball at the park in the past but was just getting back into the sport. “My family and I just recently joined the church, so we’re trying to meet some people,” Sanders said. The Rainbow Softball Center is a sprawling venue located in the southeast corner of Cosmopolitan Park. It has six softball fields arranged by color, which circle around a common area equipped with restrooms, a concession stand, picnic tables and four batting cages. Just north of this area is a full playground set with slides and climbing tires,Lyon shirt, with an adjacent sand volleyball pit. “It’s just a phenomenal complex out here and it just keeps getting better every year,” Sanders said. Ellen Dent grimaces as she watches her team, “Hitt Squad,” as they play Evangelical Free Church. Churches have their own league designation. On Sunday nights there is an array of people out at the park. Some people are lining up to get pitchers of beer at the concession stand while others are pushing children around in strollers, enjoying the sunny but breezy weather. At every hour, mobs of people begin to leave their fields and the stands as a new crowd takes over. There is a parade of colors walking to and from the parking lot, people coming to play or to cheer on families and friends. There are six games going on at any given time,Benfica shirt, and as many as 24 games per night. Each field offers something different. Walking from field to field, it’s possible to see a routine fly ball dropped on one play only to see a nifty double play turned on a hard hit ball up the middle on the next. Brad Blakemore plays on a family team called Tuffy his father-in-law sponsors. They play in a coed C league. “On Sunday nights, it’s a lot of rec. Every team has a sprinkle of good players on it, but it’s not traveling competition,” said Blakemore, who used to play for a traveling softball team in tournaments around the Midwest. “We played at a higher level, so this is more practice, get your swings in, or a recreational-type situation,” he said. The Christian Chapel Academy team bats against the United Methodist Church team. United Methodist won 22-18. Sanders said he also just played for fun, but that the competition was available if wanted. “It really depends on how competitive you want to be,Bayern Munich shirt,” Sanders said. “The coed league is not as competitive as your A and B leagues, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s a great time for everyone to come out here and get a little exercise and support the team they’re playing for.” Heather Wright, who plays for Spanky’s Sports Zone, has experience playing competitive softball, but she enjoys the leagues at the softball center as well. She just got back from a tournament in St. Louis with a traveling team before her team was set to play in the coed C league. “For the most part, most of us are out here to have fun,” Wright said. “But there’s like three or four teams that are probably all right in there together, playing for the first spot.” Chris Sanders plays shortstop for Missouri United Methodist Church. The church league is coed, which makes for different rules. Each team consists of five females and five males, and the batting order alternates sexes down the line-up. United Methodist took a 13-run lead into the bottom of the 5th inning, where a variety of errors and walks helped Christian Chapel to a comeback. Christian Chapel scored nine runs before the game finally ended on a groundout to the pitcher. United Methodist won 22-18. Christian Chapel ran onto the field and celebrated at home plate after the close loss, prompting a bystander to ask if they had won. Summing up the overall emotion at the Rainbow Softball Center,Birmingham shirt, a member of the team yelled out, “No, but we feel like we did!” |

Tiffany Brooks has the jump shot of a man and she knows it. When Brooks was little, she said she played basketball mostly with boys, and in order to stay competitive, she was forced to adapt her skills to overcome theirs. “A lot of times my shot wasn’t quick enough,Inter Milan shirt, you know, to get up, and they’d always end up blocking it, so I had to find other ways to get the ball up,” Brooks, a senior, said. “That’s a lot of where my fade-aways come from and the elevation I get on the jump shot.” EeTisha Riddle said she never played with girls until she was in the eighth grade. “I know me and Marchele (Campbell) were talking about how we thought we were the only girls that played basketball,” Riddle, a senior center, remembered. “When we saw other girls,Football shirts, we’re like, ‘Whoa, we’re not the only ones.’” And Riddle will tell you, saying the Missouri women’s basketball team plays like men is a compliment. “Playing with boys, playing street ball, that develops a lot of our games,” she said. Women’s basketball, both on the collegiate and high school level, has suffered from lack of fans and interest, mainly because of games that, in the past, have been subdued when compared to the male version. But the Tigers are out to prove the naysayers wrong. “I’ve always thought we were a very athletic team,” Brooks said. “We have the point guards and the two and three guards that can get out and run and create a lot of things off the dribble. That’s a big thing for us, just getting the ball up and pushing it and trying to attack the defense before they get a chance to set up.” According to senior guard Blair Hardiek, Brooks exemplifies the athletic player in practice, in games and even in the weight room. “Her physique is so muscular, her arms are cut,” Hardiek said. “She’s so athletic, so to stop her in games is a pretty hard task. She’s a bulldozer if you let her in the paint.” Hardiek played on a boys YMCA team growing up and still plays a game of “hardfought” basketball with her boyfriend every now and then. She said that Missouri coach Cindy Stein has instituted the slogan WTCT (which stands for work ethic, toughness, competitiveness, and teamwork) to motivate this year’s team. “At the beginning of the season, Coach Stein has kind of established us as going to be hardnosed and press and get up and down the floor,” Hardiek said. “The name of our game is toughness, so I think a lot of the way we play on the floor reflects that. That’s what we always try to do, be tough. If you fall on the ground, you need to pop back up.” To say that Riddle learned by playing with boys is an understatement. She grew up watching her brother, EeJuan, play basketball in high school and at McKendree College in Illinois where he is now a member of the school’s Hall of Fame. “My brother rebounded and blocked shots and he was real intense,” Riddle said. “And growing up and watching him, I just wanted to be like him.” Riddle’s emotion is contagious in games, Brooks said. Against South Dakota State, she didn’t just block the three-point shot of her opponent, she sent the ball several rows into the stands. When Riddle began playing with girls in junior high,Valencia shirt, her coaches had to tell her to calm down. She played rough, they said, she was overly aggressive and she yelled. “They had to teach me not to be that way,” Riddle said. “Then the older I got, like maybe junior year of high school, it started coming back. They totally erased that from me.” The Tigers want it known that their game of basketball isn’t like what you’ve seen before. “When people come and they see us, they don’t expect the screaming. They don’t expect some of the acrobatic plays like Tiffany especially makes,” Riddle said. “When they see it, they’re like, ‘You know, this is the new age of women’s basketball.’ They see it evolving,Newcastle United shirt, so maybe they’ll see that and enjoy that. “When somebody dunks, they’re going to love us.” |

There are a couple of similarities and little details, little coincidences that make this matchup in particular one of the most interesting series in the NBA Playoffs’ second round. For starters, we can consider the Big Three showdown. Last summer the Heat managed to get Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James on the same squad. They wanted titles and they new the only way to get those titles was to build a team around these three championship-ring-thirsty players. The Celtics on the other hand, had the original big three. Veterans Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen had won the 2008 championship and where the Eastern Conference Champions. And then there is that sense of revenge. The Celtics finished LeBron James’ run with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2008 and 2010, and Boston dismissed the Miami Heat from the playoffs last year. So you couldn’t really help but to expect the game to get physical. Delonte West earned a technical and Jermaine O’Neal picked up a flagrant foul before the cow manure hit the wind spinner in the 4th quarter. Paul Pierce took offense with a hard foul by James Jones. The fight earned each double-technical fouls. 58 seconds later Pierce and Dwayne Wade — who have a bit of history themselves – got back to their old habits and received another technical because of their skirmishes. With seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter the Celtics had to deal with losing Paul Pierce as he collected two technical fouls and was ejected from the game. But the man of the hour was no other than Dwayne Wade. He had had under par performances in the regular season games against the Celtics,Birmingham shirt, but he was brilliant on Sunday, leading the Heat with 38 points in 14-of-21 shooting with 1 board, 5 assists and 3 blocks. Extra kudos go to James Jones, who had 25 points coming off the bench,Retro Football Shirts, as the Miami Heat defeated the Boston Celtics at South Beach 99-90. The king without a crown, LeBron James, finished the game with 22 points, six rebounds and 5 assists for the Heat. It wasn’t spectacular,Atletico Madrid shirt, but he sure did a better job than then the Celtics crew. Not considering Paul Pierce’s early departure, the Celtics weren’t at their best anyway. Ray Allen scored 25 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Pierce scored 19 before he got kicked out of the game and Delonte West finished with 10 for the Celtics. Perhaps the main issue here was that Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett were held to a combined 14 points on 6-for-19 shooting,Valencia shirt, and considering that Jones had 25 coming off from Miami’s bench, Garnett and Rondo performance were an utter disappointment. Game 2 will be held on Tuesday in Miami. The Celtics are really going to have to step up if they want to survive the series. Particularly Rondo and Kevin Garnett. At the beginning of the series, some had speculated that Rondo would be the key to the Celtics success or failure. Considering that both team rely heavily on their 3 big stars, the talented point-guard could give the Celtics an advantage down the stretch. Little did we know that James Jones would end up giving Miami that coveted big- four advantage. If head coach Doc Rivers finds a way to get Rondo back into his top shape, the Celtics have plenty of arguments to win the series. Kevin Garnett should also find a way to step up his game. There is no surviving this series if the Celtics find themselves too far behind by game four. |

After two weeks of struggles, the Hickman offense finally found what it had been looking for, the back of the net. The Kewpies defeated Pembroke Hill 10-5 on Saturday at Cosmopolitan Park. The win marked a dramatic improvement in the Kewpies’ offensive production. Five players scored multiple goals for Hickman (2-2). The attack had struggled in the team’s previous two games, scoring a combined eight goals. “We took more shots today and made better passes,” Hickman coach Jamie Mullen said. “I told the guys they were free to go to the goal. Once we did that, things opened up and we were able to build on that.” After allowing Pembroke Hill attacker Zach Yates’ early goal, Hickman found an offensive rhythm and dominated scoring and possession for the rest of the game. The Kewpies scored twice in the closing minutes of the first quarter. Midfielder Mike Moesel’s steal resulted in a Hickman fast break. Moesel found attacker Zach Nikin wide open behind the Pembroke Hill defenders,Paris Saint Germain shirt, and Nikin beat goalie Gary Washburn. Hickman senior midfielder Andrew Mackley scored unassisted four minutes later. The Kewpies’ offense kept up the torrid pace,Santos shirt, scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second quarter. Attackers Chris Hurst and Kieren Drapeau scored successive goals off Moesel assists. Mackley added another goal, firing a shot past Washburn from 30 feet. “We worked on attacking all week and coach gave us the green light (to take shots),” Mackley said. “I figured why not take it. I couldn’t stand to lose to Pembroke this year.” Mackley, Hurst,Bordeaux shirt, Drapeau, Nikin and Moesel finished with two goals. Moesel led the Kewpies with three assists. Captain Colin Defenbau led Pembroke Hill with two goals and one assist. Pembroke Hill had defeated Hickman each of the past two years. Mullen said most of his players were conscious of the teams’ history going into the game. “More than how they played on the field,Dortmund shirt, I’m proud of their attitude,” Mullen said. “Confidence was a big thing initially because (Pembroke) had such a good program last year, and they still do, but as we got rolling we started to believe we were a better team.” |

The Columbia College softball team beat Culver-Stockton 4-0 Thursday in the championship game of the NAIA Region V Softball Tournament. The victory gives the Cougars a spot in the NAIA National Tournament,Real Madrid shirt, which begins on May 17 in Decatura, Ala. Junior Katie McMahon (17-8) pitched a three-hit shutout and catcher Stephanie Stowe hit a home run and drove in three runs. McMahon and Stowe were named to the all-region team after the tournament,Bayern Munich shirt, and McMahon was also named the pitcher of the year. Lindsey Williams, Stephanie Kababie,Dortmund shirt, and Chris Schoonover received academic all-region awards for having a grade point average above 3.5. MU GOLF: On Thursday, the MU women’s golf team finished with a round of 310, putting them in 15th place after Day 1 of the NCAA Central Regional Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. Senior Stephanie Wavro led the Tigers with a 4-over 75. The second round of play begins today, and the tournament will conclude on Saturday. CYCLING: Floyd Landis claims the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s lead attorney approached his lawyer offering “the shortest suspension they’d ever given an athlete” if Landis provided information that implicated Lance Armstrong for doping. Landis said he made the Armstrong allegations public Thursday not because he planned to use it as evidence when testimony begins Monday in his arbitration hearing,Sevilla shirt, but to show the lengths USADA will go to in prosecuting athletes. “It was offensive at best,” Landis said during a teleconference from Los Angeles. “It speaks to the character of the prosecution.” The 2006 Tour de France champion said USADA general counsel Travis Tygart approached his attorney, Howard Jacobs, with a deal shortly after Landis’ positive doping test during the Tour. He said Jacobs characterized the conversation as one in which USADA would offer a deal if Landis provided information about seven-time Tour champion Armstrong “or information about someone more important than me.” |
